Locusts Destroy Crops

MOSCOW -- Locusts have invaded more than 8 million hectares of crops in Kazakhstan this summer and pose a serious threat to the upcoming harvest, a news report said Thursday.

The damage to the harvest is expected to be severe, Itar-Tass said, citing the Kazakh Agriculture Ministry.

Farmers and agriculture officials usually spray pesticides to kill the locusts early in the summer, but the government didn't have enough money this year.

The locusts have spread north into Russia and south to Uzbekistan.
