Japanese Output Rises

TOKYO -- Production at Japan's factories and mines rose 3 percent in June for the largest increase in 30 months, the government says.

The month-on-month gain, calculated after adjustment for seasonal factors, was the largest since January 1997, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry said Thursday.

It also far exceeded forecasts from economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires. They had predicted industrial production would rise 1.6 percent in June.

Ministry officials attributed the boost to economic recovery around Asia, a key market for Japanese manufactures.

Japan has been fighting its worst recession in more than 50 years.
