Italy's Hot Shooters Beat Russia, 102-79

PARIS -- Guard Carlton Myers scored 22 points and forward Gregor Fucka added 19 to lead Italy into the semifinals with a 102-79 victory over Russia.

Italy, silver medalist behind Yugoslavia at the Europeans two years ago, overwhelmed Russia with its well-organized defense and outside shooting.

Myers sparked Italy with 15 minutes remaining on the clock, hitting two 3-pointers for an 11-point lead. Myers made four of his five 3-point attempts.

Successive 3-pointers by Fucka and Alessandro Abbio made it an 18-point game with just over four minutes left on the clock and the Italians went to their bench to finish the game.

Guard Vasily Karassev led Russia with 22 points and center Vitaly Nossov had 15. Karassev went 5-of-7 from three-point range.

Italy will play Yugoslavia in the semifinals after the two-time defending champions beat Germany 78-68. Guard Vlado Scepanovic came off the bench to score 17 points for Yugoslavia.

"Everybody is saying Yugoslavia is not playing well. But no one has beaten them in an important match," Italy's Yugoslav-born coach Bogdan Tanjevic said.

"We reached our first goal, which was to qualify for the Olympics," he said.

Alberto Herreros scored 28 points Thursday to lead Spain to an upset 74-72 victory over Lithuania and a semifinal showdown with France.

Lithuanian forward Karnisovas had 17 points, while Portland Trail Blazers center Arvydas Sabonis had only three points and three rebounds in 16 minutes of playing time.

France posted a come-from-behind 66-63 victory over Turkey. France trailed most of the game until forward Laurent Foirest hit a 3-pointer with 1:02 minutes left for a 61-59 lead.

By reaching the semifinals, France and Spain also qualified for next year's Olympics in Sydney. The top five teams, plus Yugoslavia, which won the World Championship last year, qualify for the Olympics.

Russia, silver medalist at last year's worlds, can still qualify through the playoffs between losing quarterfinalists.
