Greenpeace Advice

KIEV -- The environmental group Greenpeace will propose that Ukraine build a natural gas power plant to make up for energy losses when the Chernobyl nuclear plant is shut down, the group said Tuesday.

Greenpeace wants Ukraine to build the $500 million plant instead of finishing two nuclear reactors at other plants in preparation for Chernobyl's shutdown, Greenpeace energy expert Tobias M?nchmeyer said at a news conference in Kiev.

Ukraine promised the West to shut down Chernobyl after one of the plant's reactors blew up in 1986 and sent a radioactive cloud over much of Europe.

But Ukraine has said it can only bring Chernobyl offline if it gets enough international aid.
