Explanation Accepted

MOSCOW -- Chechen authorities have accepted Russia's explanation for the arrest of Chechnya's security minister last week, a spokesman for the breakaway republic said Thursday.

Chechnya shut down all 20 of its representative missions outside the Russian capital and threatened to close the one in Moscow on Tuesday unless the Russian government provided an explanation for the arrest of Security Minister Turpal-Ali Atgeriyev.

"I was going to close the mission today, but I got in touch with the office of [Chechen] President [Aslan] Maskhadov and was told that already last night an explanation had been received from the Russian government, which satisfied the president and government of the Chechen republic,'' the head of the mission in Moscow and Maskhadov's former spokesman, Mairbek Vachagayev, said on Russian television.

He didn't say what the explanation provided by Russia was.
