Economic Crime Wave

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan -- Economic crimes and corruption are on the rise in Kyrgyzstan, with the shadow economy possibly accounting for more than a quarter of gross domestic product, President Askar Akayev said Thursday.

"The shadow economy is about 10 percent to 12 percent of GDP and some experts put it as high as 25 percent to 26 percent," Akayev said at a gathering of law and order officers in the capital.
