Dutch Firm Buys GNC

PITTSBURGH -- Royal Numico, a Dutch food concern, is buying the nutritional supplements producer General Nutrition Companies Inc. for $1.75 billion in cash. The companies said the deal would create the largest firm in the world devoted exclusively to nutrition.

Under the terms of the deal announced Monday, Numico will assume roughly $760 million in debt and GNC shareholders will receive $25 per share for their stock, a slight premium over GNC's closing price of $22.87 Friday on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
