Drug Problem Targeted

MOSCOW -- President Boris Yeltsin on Tuesday approved a government anti-drug program that calls for greater police efforts to curb drug dealers and provide treatment for addicts.

The use of drugs has soared in Russian since the collapse of the Soviet Union opened up the country's borders and allowed people more personal freedom.

It was unclear how much success the new program will have. Russia's government has little money or experience to tackle its growing drug problem seriously.
