Church Election Set

YEREVAN, Armenia -- The Armenian Apostolic Church will hold elections from Oct. 26 to 31 to replace the late Catholicos Garegin I, church officials announced Wednesday.

The new head of the church will be elected by the National Assembly of Armenia's 49 bishops, as well as several hundred lay people representing Armenian communities abroad, the church press service said.

The church's Supreme Spiritual Council ruled Tuesday that the committee preparingfor the election will be headed by Vache Ovsepian, the U.S.-based leader of the West American diocese. The committee will also include Armenian religious leaders from Russia and Ukraine.
