Belarus Blasts Pay Scale

MINSK, Belarus -- The Belarussian Finance Ministry says the country's bankers earn too much money and should accept salaries closer to those of farmers.

The ministry had urged the Central Bank to tell commercial banks to cut their employees' salaries to bring them closer to farmers' wages, a Central Bank official said Tuesday.

Statistics Ministry data show the highest salary in the former Soviet state was in the banking sector and totaled 41 million Belarussian rubles (about $150), while the average salary in the agriculture sector was 10 million rubles ($25).
