Bank Fined $60M

NEW YORK -- The Bankers Trust Corp., which pleaded guilty earlier this year to criminal charges that it had illegally diverted unclaimed funds from its customers into the bank's accounts, has been sentenced in a federal District Court in Manhattan to pay a $60 million fine to the government.

The sentencing Monday by Federal District Judge John Koeltl was in keeping with the plea agreement the New York bank had entered in March when it admitted that senior bank officers and employees had illegally misappropriated about $19.1 million in unclaimed checks and other credits.

Bankers Trust, which was acquired in June by Deutsche Bank, has returned about $17.85 million to its customers.
