2 Brits Held at Border

STAVROPOL, Southern Russia -- Russian border guards detained two British citizens in Kabardino-Balkaria on Tuesday evening for violating the border regime.

The two did not provide proper documents, the North Caucasus Department of the Federal Border Guard Service said.

The Britons said they were planning to climb Mt. Elbrus, the highest peak in the Caucasus Mountains.

A separate investigation is also continuing into an incident involving a U.S. citizen, who traveled to Nalchik, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, in what is seen by the authorities as a clear violation of visa regulations.

Neither of the three foreigners could convincingly explain their reasons for traveling to the North Caucasus.
