2 Britons Released

MOSCOW -- Two Britons detained by Russian border guards in Kabardino-Balkaria have been released, Mike Haddock, spokesman for the British Embassy, said Friday.

The two, who said they wanted to climb Mount Elbrus, were detained Tuesday for traveling without the proper documents.

After the embassy contacted the Kabardino-Balkaria authorities, the Britons were fined 400 rubles each and set free. They were on their way to Moscow, Haddock said.

Another foreigner, Marc Shurdum, 66, an American who arrived in the Caucasus from Istanbul, Turkey, with improper documents, has been fined and expelled from Russia.
