U.S., China Talk WTO

AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- U.S. trade representatives held informal talks with Chinese officials Monday but stressed afterward that it was up to China to restart talks on its application to join the World Trade Organization.

Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Richard Fisher also told reporters that Taiwan's membership application to the WTO would not be held up to meet China's desire that it become a member first.

"The decision now to proceed is squarely in China's hands," Fisher said at an earlier seminar ahead of an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation trade ministers meeting on Tuesday.
