Top Italtel Official Honored

The general director of Italian telecom monopoly Italtel received an honorary doctoral degree from the Moscow University of Telecommunications and Information Science on Thursday.

Italtel, which built a state-of-the-art training center at the university four years ago, has been actively working on the Russian market for the past decade.

Upon receiving the decree, Italtel director Giovanni Barbieri heaped praise on Russia and the university, promising to continue his firm's active involvement in this country's telecom sector.

"Italtel will do everything in its power to continue its work in Russia and see it to its logical conclusion within the walls of this university as well as with its government partners here," he said.

Italtel opened its 1,300-square-meter training center at the university as part of an agreement with the Russian Communications Ministry to make deeper inroads into the Russian telecom market.

In the past four years, the center has trained more than 700 Russian telecom workers, as well as students studying at the university.
