Tikhonov Scores Again to Help Spartak Strengthen League Lead

Champion Spartak Moscow moved 10 points clear in the Premier division with a 3-0 away win over second place Lokomotiv Moscow on Sunday.

Spartak, winner of its last six matches with Lokomotiv since 1996, dominated throughout to end its rival's nine-game winning streak.

The six-time champion went ahead in the 14th minute when league top scorer Andrei Tikhonov wrong-footed keeper Ruslan Nigmatullin with a curving free kick for his 10th goal of the season.

Spartak captain Ilya Tsymbalar took advantage of another defensive mistake to head into an empty net midway through the second half.

Defender Igor Cherevchenko added to Lokomotiv's woes when he deflected Nikolai Parfyonov's cross into his own net in the 85th minute.

Alexei Arifullin then capped a miserable night for his team when he was sent off for a bad foul on Tsymbalar with three minutes left.

Premier division newcomer Saturn, which was forced to play in Moscow after being banned from playing in its own stadium for one match after a clash with Spartak fans last week, beat Rotor Volgograd 1-0.

In Sochi, third-placed CSKA Moscow lost two valuable points when it was held to a 2-2 draw at bottom club Zhemchuzhina. The army side is now 13 points behind Spartak but has played three fewer games.

In a rematch of last month's Russian Cup final, holders Zenit St. Petersburg repeated its win over Dynamo Moscow with Gennady Popovich securing three points away from home with a 48th minute strike.
