State May Widen Belgian Poultry Ban

Russia may extend a temporary ban on poultry meat imports from Belgium to those from France, Germany and the Netherlands if it finds farms there used feed containing dioxin, the chief veterinarian said Wednesday.

"We know that around 80 farms in France received animal feed from Belgium and we will partially ban imports from there," said Vyatcheslav Avilov, head of the veterinary department at the Agriculture Ministry.

He said that Russia also requested information from Germany and the Netherlands on Belgian animal feed imports.

"Our representatives are now meeting officials there, and our decision will depend on the results of these meetings," he said.

Russia set from Monday a ban on poultry meat from Belgium after chicken and egg stocks from some Belgian farms were found to contain cancer-causing dioxin. (Story, page 17.)
