Ship Route Discussed

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East -- Russian, American and Chinese officials met Wednesday to discuss a proposed new route for shipping cargo between the United States and China.

The proposed route, which would take cargo through Russia's far eastern ports instead of via South Korea and Japan, is expected to shorten the sea journey to the U.S. West Coast by nearly 2,400 kilometers.

The Russians and the Americans at the talks in Vladivostok are members of a panel within the so-called Gore-Stepashin commission. They were expected to present their report on the proposed sea route to Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin and U.S. Vice President Al Gore.

The Chinese were invited as special guests.
