Sakhalin Tunnel Eyed

MOSCOW -- First Deputy Prime Minister Nikolai Aksyonenko plans to review the options for resuming the construction of a tunnel between the Russian mainland and the island of Sakhalin.

During his current tour of the Far East, Aksyonenko will look into the project begun in the 1950s, the deputy prime minister's spokesman Boris Domnenko said.

Japan has expressed interest in this project in the context of establishing a transcontinental railway link between Tokyo and London, a distance of some 15,000 kilometers.
