Russian Troops Freed

MOSCOW -- Four kidnapped Russian soldiers have been released after police negotiated with the abductors in the breakaway region of Chechnya, Itar-Tass reported Wednesday.

The four unidentified soldiers were handed over Tuesday in Chechnya to Russian police officers, the news agency said. Russian police said they had direct negotiations with the kidnappers, but did not say if a ransom had been paid, Itar-Tass reported said.

In a separate incident, gunmen attacked a Russian outpost on the Chechen border with mortars and grenades early Wednesday, authorities said. Nobody was hurt by the bombardment which came from Chechen territory, they said.
