Russia Beats Japan 5-0 For 1st Win

PORTLAND, Oregon -- Olga Letuchova had two goals and an assist and Irina Grigorieva added three assists as Russia dominated Japan 5-0 for its first victory in the Women's World Cup.

With three points from the victory Wednesday night, Russia put itself into position to advance from Group C into the quarterfinals of the soccer tournament.

Russia finishes group play against Canada on Saturday in New Jersey. Japan faces group leader Norway on Saturday in Chicago.

Japan looked unsure of itself against the more aggressive Russians, who won most of the balls against their smaller opponents. Japan's impatience on offense also produced some sloppy passes.

Russia was more accurate inside the box and stayed on the attack after taking a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Also Wednesday, defending champion Norway became the first team to secure a berth in the quarterfinals with a crushing 7-1 triumph over Canada.

Forward Ann Kristin Aarones led the onslaught with two goals before a crowd of 16,448 at Jack Kent Cooke Stadium.

Norway improved to 2-0, while Canada dropped to 0-1-1 in Group C play.
