Race Crash Kills 7

RIGA, Latvia -- Police opened an investigation Monday to determine whether race organizers were negligent in an accident the day before when a cross-country rally car left the track and plunged into the crowd, killing seven spectators and injuring 25.

The accident occurred during a race in the town of Lazdona, 150 kilometers east of the capital, Riga.

Janis Pinkulis, a reporter at Latvia's Sporta Avize newspaper, said speculation focused on whether spectators were allowed to bypass special barriers and stand too close to the track.
