Primakov Returns

MOSCOW -- Former Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov returned to Moscow on Tuesday after undergoing successful back surgery in Switzerland.

The surgery, conducted at a Geneva clinic on June 14, was considered routine and went without complications, Primakov's wife, Irina, said, according to the Interfax news agency.

"Yevgeny Maximovich [Primakov] feels well,'' she said.

Primakov, a former diplomat and spymaster, has seen his popularity rise further since President Boris Yeltsin dismissed him in May, and he could be a top presidential contender in 2000.
