Population Shrinking

MOSCOW -- Over the first four months of 1999, Russia's population shrunk by 265,800, or 0.18 percent, to 146.1 million.

The State Statistics Agency, or Goskomstat, said that from January to April the population receded faster than over the first four months of 1998, when it decreased by 159,700, or 0.11 percent.
