Moonshine Squeezed

MOSCOW -- The State Duma on Thursday backed a government crackdown on the widespread practice of brewing cheap vodka at home by passing the first stage of a law to hit the makers of moonshine equipment.

Russia produces millions of liters of homemade alcohol, known as samogon. The government is eager to ban the practice because thousands of people are poisoned by the cheap tipple every year and state revenues are lost.

The State Duma, the lower house of parliament, passed the first reading of the bill, which, if enacted, will force those hoping to sell or make equipment to brew spirits to get a permit.
