Manager Killed in Chelyabinsk 2 Months After Fake Obituary

An industrial manager was shot dead outside the city of Chelyabinsk in an apparent contract killing - two months after reading his own obituary in local papers, law enforcement officials said.

Police are trying to find who placed the false obituary, which they think was an attempt to intimidate Anatoly Peturov, general director of the furnace repair concern Uraldomnaremont.

Peturov was shot last Friday near Chelyabinsk, police said. Neither the killer nor the getaway car have been found, police spokesman Igor Buzyev said.

Peturov died two hours later and was buried over the weekend.

On March 23, the city's Vecherny Chelyabinsk and Chelyabinsky Rabochy dailies published a premature obituary that said "Uraldomnaremont with great sorrow informs that Peturov tragically died in a car accident and expresses condolences to the relatives of the deceased."

Buzyev said police are still looking for the young man who placed the ad posing as Uraldomnaremont's trade union head and Peturov's close ally Anatoly Fatkulin.

Peturov had been attacked earlier, Buzyev said. In March, unidentified assailants attacked Peturov while he was waiting for a car to pick him up outside his home and repeatedly struck the manager with a metal rod.

Buzyev said this attack and the faked obituary were apparent attempts to intimidate Peturov. He said police and prosecutors are looking into conflicts within Uraldomnaremont to try to determine whether anyone at the shop could have ordered Peturov's murder.

Buzyev said that Uraldomnaremont was a "tasty morsel" - a rich enterprise likely to spark a fight for control.

Peturov was killed only 19 days after being re-elected general director for a five-year term, Buzyev said.

No one could be reached at Uraldomnaremont's Chelyabinsk offices to comment Friday.
