Inmate Standoff Ends

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- Government forces disarmed a group of 14 death-row convicts who took three prison guards hostage and killed one of them. One of the prisoners killed himself by cutting his throat rather than surrender.

The inmates, armed with self-made knives and spears, took three guards hostage in a prison in the Kazakh capital, Astana, on Thursday evening, said Interior Ministry spokesman Andrei Kashlaty.

One of the hostages, a 25-year-old sergeant who was identified only by his last name, Kazhimuratov, was severely beaten and stabbed, and thrown out in the street. He died after being taken to a hospital.

The convicts were demanding firearms, a car and a fueled airplane, Kashlaty said.
