Imports Not Welcome

MINSK, Belarus -- President Alexander Lukashenko said on television Friday that his country might restrict imports unless the West buys more goods from Belarus.

"We need to decide how to make the West buy our goods," Lukashenko told workers at a synthetic fabrics factory.

"And we can make them - if they don't buy our goods, we won't let their goods in here," he added.

Belarus has suffered a sharp fall in exports since Russia plunged into crisis.

"Russia opened its borders. But everything is private there. You can't influence them - they will even buy something more expensive as long as it's not Belarussian," Lukashenko said.
