Grain Forecast Cut

MOSCOW -- A summer heat wave that has swept Russia for the second year in a row has caused the food and agriculture ministry to cut its official grain harvest forecast for this year, officials said Thursday.

Agriculture Minister Vladimir Shcherbak said Russia would harvest 55 to 60 million tons of grain in 1999, down from the earlier forecast of more than 70 million tons. Last year, farmers harvested a mere 47.8 million tons.
