FRANKFURT, Germany -- The merger between Germany's Deutsche Bank and U.S.-based Bankers Trust has been completed, creating the world's largest commercial financial institution, officials said.

Together, Germany's biggest bank and the eighth largest in the United States have assets of about 1.4 trillion Deutsche marks ($735 billion/715.8 billion euros) and a work force of some 95,000 as of Dec. 31.

Counting first quarter figures as of March 31, total assets were put at 1.55 trillion marks, according to a Deutsche Bank statement Friday.
