Bulgarian Ties Improve

MOSCOW -- Bulgarian Prime Minister Ivan Kostov said Tuesday that relations with Russia were improving despite his government's desire to join NATO, a policy that Moscow does not welcome.

Kostov said his visit to Moscow had helped to end a time of uncertainty in relations between the two nations.

"We regard Russia as a strategic partner, and not only from the point of view of trade and economic relations, but also in the social, political and cultural spheres,'' the Bulgarian prime minister stressed.

Kostov held talks with Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin on political, economic and security issues. Several documents were signed on cooperation, mainly on combating crime and illegal financial operations.
