Bootleg Booze Targeted

MOSCOW -- The illegal alcohol trade now accounts for 35 percent of the market, down from 55 percent, but the government must do much more to stamp out bootleg booze, Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin said Tuesday.

The Russian government wants to impose tight control over the lucrative alcohol trade, but illegal businesses continue to thrive - and evade taxes.

Stepashin claimed the government has managed to reduce the share of the illegal trade from 55 percent to 35 percent of the market, but that the results were not reassuring, Interfax?? reported. He did not say over what time period the reduction occurred.
