Armenia Premier Quits

YEREVAN, Armenia -- Prime Minister Armen Darbinyan has resigned in a move that could pave the way for President Robert Kocharyan to appoint one of the winners of last week's parliamentary election to the post.

Darbinyan's decision on Monday had been widely expected after Armenia's May 30 election, although the constitution does not stipulate that the prime minister must resign. Darbinyan did not take part in the polls. Kocharyan's press secretary, Vage Gabrielyan, said the president had not yet decided whether to accept Darbinyan's resignation.

Government sources said last week that Kocharyan was likely to name as prime minister influential Defense Minister Vazgen Sarkisyan, who led his Unity bloc to victory in the election.
