Abkhazia Peacekeepers

MOSCOW -- Russian military engineers on peacekeeping duties have defused 22,666 explosives in the Georgian breakaway province of Abkhazia during the past five years, the Defense Ministry said Friday.

The defused explosives included 1,126 anti-tank and 1,540 anti-personnel mines, about 1,000 artillery shells, and more than 18,000 homemade bombs, the ministry said.

Frequent outbreaks of violence have been reported in Abkhazia since separatists drove out Georgian government troops in 1993. Russian peacekeepers have failed to end the clashes.
