Russia Welcomes Korean Dialogue

Russia backs South Korea's policy of forging closer ties with North Korea, President Boris Yeltsin told South Korean President Kim Dae-jung in a Kremlin meeting Friday.

"Peace on the [Korean] peninsula has crucial significance for stability in the region," the two leaders said in a joint statement. "The Russian side supports the line taken by Kim Dae-jung's administration [in creating] a productive dialogue between the South and North."

Russia is the last of four major powers from which Kim is trying to draw support for his so-called "sunshine policy" of engagement with North Korea. Kim previously visited the United States, China and Japan.

Yeltsin interrupted his vacation in southern Russia to meet Kim, and is likely to continue his rest after talks conclude, presidential spokesman Dmitry Yakushkin said.

Yeltsin's meeting with Kim was broadcast on television with sound f the first such appearance the president has made in several days.
