Russia to Check NATO

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Russia is exercising its rights under the East-West Conventional Forces Treaty, or CFE, to inspect NATO troop numbers in Macedonia, NATO said Friday.

NATO spokesman Jamie Shea said the inspection, permitted under the CFE "Vienna Document," began Friday afternoon and would take 48 hours.

The allies will cooperate fully, he said. "They will see more than 13,000 NATO troops," Shea said, adding that many were engaged in humanitarian relief for over 200,000 ethnic Albanian refugees from Kosovo.

He called the inspection request "wholly routine" and in line with a provision of the CFE that allows signatories to request inspection when the level of a force deployed outside of normal boundaries exceeds 11,000.
