Restaurant Bites

Great Place

It's hardly Venice but the place is still as close as you'll get to dining among the gondolas in Moscow. Located at the smart Riverside Towers office complex, the stylish bistro/restaurant is planning to start serving outside with the first hint of summer. Waiters will fly among tables all along the canal and even on the footbridge above.

The cuisine at the place has been drawing busy lunch crowds to the chic and shiny interior (conceived by the designers of Jazz Cafe) since opening in December. The cosmopolitan menu sounds slightly more thrilling than it tastes, but quality is still high and prices reasonable with appetizers costing between $4.50 and $7 and entrees between $6 and $22. Crisp calamari with a spicy tomato sauce and Thai chicken kebabs work well for appetizers, while the tender New Zealand lamb chops with garlic mashed potatoes make for a good entree. Try the delicious parfait-like cassata with berry sauce for dessert (to be enjoyed perhaps with a $35 bottle of Khvanchkara, the real stuff that Stalin liked, made in Georgia rather than Moscow).

the place also does business lunch fixed menus at $6 and $9, and has a sister, Cafe My Place, in the adjacent building (Bldg. 3), which claims to serve "one of the best cups of cappuccino in Moscow."

the place, Riverside Towers, 52 Kosmodamianskaya Naberezhnaya Bldg. 5, (across the Garden Ring from the Kalinka Stockmann Supermarket near Paveletskaya Ploshchad). Metro: Paveletskaya. Open daily 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Credit cards: V, M, AE, DC. Tel: 725-4070.
