Powerful Bomb Defused in St. Pete

Explosives experts found and defused a powerful bomb in a St. Petersburg school, averting a blast that could have caused extensive damage, a news report said.

Authorities were tipped off by an unidentified man who called police to say a bomb had been planted in the school in central St. Petersburg, Itar-Tass reported. It was found Thursday evening on the ground floor of the school, when no students were present.

The bomb, equivalent to 1.7 kilograms of dynamite, was equipped with a timing device set for 9:35 p.m., the news agency said.

It did not say what time the bomb was found or defused.

Earlier this month, an explosive device equivalent to 400 grams of dynamite was found near another school in St. Petersburg and was also defused, the report said.
