Nestle Sales Pick Up

VEVEY, Switzerland -- Swiss food group Nestle SA said Wednesday that first-quarter sales fell 2.7 percent from a strong year-earlier period to 16.7 billion Swiss francs ($10.99 billion), but had begun to bounce back in April.

The sales data confirmed analysts' expectations that the world's biggest food company would stumble out of the blocks in 1999, but Nestl? reiterated it still expected to boost full-year sales and profit as global demand recovers.

Nestl? reported in March that 1998 net profit rose 2.6 percent to 4.29 billion Swiss francs on sales of 71.75 billion francs, up 2.5 percent.
