Moscow Prices Inflate

MOSCOW -- The average monthly income in Moscow is much higher than in the rest of Russia f but so is inflation.

In February, according to the State Statistics Committee, the average per-capita income in Moscow amounted to 4,902 rubles ($204) a month, compared with 1,225 rubles ($51) nationwide.

But in the first quarter of 1999, inflation on consumer goods was 21.3 percent in Moscow and 16 percent for the nation as a whole.

From Jan. 1 to March 31, the price of foodstuffs rose 24.4 percent in Moscow and 18.3 percent nationally; the price of consumer goods rose 19 percent in the city, 14 percent nationally; and services went up 13. 7 percent and 9.5 percent.
