Japan Mum on Budget

TOKYO -- Japan got fresh data on Friday showing its long economic slide is not over, but the government said it was still not ready to pump more money into the economy.

Output, spending and price data remained modestly weaker, but Finance Minister Kiichi Miyazawa said he wanted to wait until September to decide whether to compile an extra budget.

Many economists have said a new budget is certain, given the poor outlook for the world's No. 2 economy.

Industrial production fell 2.7 percent in April from March, spending by wage earners' households fell 2.1 percent in April from a year earlier and Tokyo consumer prices dipped 0.6 percent in May, the government reported.
