Irkutsk AIDS Cases Up

IRKUTSK, Eastern Siberia -- The number of people inflicted with AIDS has surged in the Irkutsk region in the past two months.

In April, 96 new AIDS cases were registered in the city of Irkutsk, the Anti-AIDS regional center said.

A total of 175 people suffering from AIDS live in the region, including 123 in the city, the center said.

Most of them, 98 patients, contracted AIDS through drug use. The majority are less than 20 years old.

Up to 3,000 residents of the region will likely contract AIDS unless the situation in rectified, doctors said.

No separate facility exists in Irkutsk for HIV carriers. Drug addicts wait several months for treatment at the regional clinic.
