Fires Ravage Siberia

MOSCOW -- Fires have damaged 60,000 hectares of forests in Russia this year, the Federal Forest Service said.

The service reported that 219 fires were raging in 19 regions Friday.

The situation is tense in the Chita, Amur, Khabarovsk and Tuva regions, said Alexander Parfyonov, deputy head of the forest protection department.

"Hot and windy weather without rains" has aggravated conditions in Khakassiya, the Altai territory, and the Novosibirsk and Omsk regions, Parfyonov said.
