Farmers Block Borders

RIGA, Latvia -- Latvian farmers, protesting the government's agricultural policies, on Friday blocked border crossings, backing up trucks for kilometers and causing delays.

Gunars Dabolinsh, head of the border guard administration, said hundreds of trucks were lined up at Grenctale on the main route to Lithuania and Central Europe, while Estonian and Russian border points were less congested.

Dabolinsh said the protests had been peaceful so far, though a complete blockade of an Estonian border crossing had been broken up by police.

The farmers are unhappy at cheap imports from neighboring countries resulting from the Baltic Free Trade Agreement.
