Drug Smuggling Rises

MOSCOW -- Smuggling of hard drugs into Russia is on the rise, with most of the narcotics being brought into the country from Afghanistan through Central Asia, a border guard official said.

In 1999, Russian border guards seized 300 kilograms of heroin, Colonel General Konstantin Totsky said Thursday at a news conference. Last year, 200 kilograms of heroin was confiscated at Russian borders, he said in remarks reported by Itar-Tass.

"Afghanistan ranks first in the world in the volume of production of heavy drugs," Totsky said. "By the year 2000 the potential growth of drug production in Afghanistan is expected to reach 700 tons."
