Chechen Visit Possible

MOSCOW -- President Boris Yeltsin may meet with the leader of Chechnya in Moscow this week for talks on improving relations if preliminary meetings clear various obstacles, Russian news agencies reported Monday.

Chechen representatives arrived in Moscow on Monday to try to clear the way for a meeting between Yeltsin and Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov, possibly Thursday or Friday, the agencies reported.

Maskhadov has said he would reassert Chechnya's claim to independence if he meets Yeltsin. He also wants to discuss Russian economic aid to rebuild the shattered Chechen economy.
