Boeing Rocket Fails

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida -- A $230 million mission by Boeing's new Delta 3 rocket went badly wrong Tuesday, leaving a commercial communications satellite stranded thousands of kilometers too low, company officials said.

The 12-story rocket, which was flying for the first time since the booster exploded on its maiden launch last August, vaulted off its launch Tuesday night. But a little less than 22 minutes later, the rocket's second-stage engine failed to relight leaving its costly cargo in a lopsided orbit, with a low point about 157 kilometers above the Earth.

"Everything had looked so good," mission director Rich Murphy said. "I really have no idea what happened."
