Ballerina Sues Paper

MOSCOW -- A Moscow court began hearing a lawsuit Thursday in which a leading Russian ballet star claims a newspaper falsely reported she had a daughter, according to news reports.

Maya Plisetskaya, one of the country's top ballerinas, is suing the popular Moskovsky Komsomolets daily for reporting in January that she had a "secret'' daughter who lives in Israel.

Plisetskaya is seeking $500,000 in compensation for moral damages.

Her lawyer, Boris Kuznetsov, said in court that "the information contained in the article is hypocritical, untruthful and defamatory to the honor of the worldwide star,'' Itar-Tass reported.

The newspaper pleaded not guilty. Moskovsky Komsomolets' lawyer Andrei Muratov said he was optimistic about the outcome of the case.
