15% Duty in Effect

MOSCOW -- A 15 percent export duty on scrap metals went into affect Friday, seven days after a resolution on the tariff was published in the state's official journal.

The duty, which accounts for 15 percent of the value of scrap metals but not less than 15 euros per ton, will be in affect for six months. Goods subject to the tariff include scrap iron and steel, as well as ingots being exported to the West.

The tariff follows a number of similar measures made by the government as it looks for ways to bolster its dwindling coffers. In recent weeks, temporary tariffs also have been slapped on commodities such as oil and sugar.
