Zhirinovsky Probe

MOSCOW -- The State Duma on Friday voted 241-43 to order an inquiry into Vladimir Zhirinovsky's private purchases of more than 200 automobiles, more than 100 apartments in various cities around Russia, and nonpayment of taxes.

The allegations were first leveled at Zhirinovsky by Communist Deputy Viktor Ilyukhin on Wednesday in response to Zhirinovsky's charge that Prosecutor General Yury Skuratov had furnished his apartment using 1.5 million rubles of illegally obtained funds.

Ilyukhin said Zhirinovsky, whose Liberal Democratic Party of Russia has often been accused of but never proven guilty of improper financial practices, owed 1.5 billion rubles in back taxes.

The security committee, which Ilyukhin heads, and the committee on finance, taxes, banks and budget will carry out the inquiry.
